All games at 7 pm: Vardaman at Shaw, Noxapater at Cathedral

Smithville at Falkner the Big Game for 1A Region 1

October 31, 2011 Leave a comment

The only thing left to be settled in 1A Region 1 is who will be the two and the three seeds.  The Vardaman Rams are the region champions because of wins over both Smithville and Falkner.  The H.W. Byers Lions can finish no higher than fourth place because they trail the other schools by two games.

Vardaman  7-0–Z

Falkner  6-1–X

Smithville 6-1–X

H.W. Byers 5-3–X

Thrasher 4-4–OUT

X–Earned playoff birth

Y–Earned first round playoff game at home

Z–Earned Region Crown

The only game with playoff implications will be when the Falkner Eagles host the Smithville Seminoles Friday night.  The winner of that contest will earn the region’s two seed and a first round playoff game, while the loser will take the three spot and be forced to hit the road to open the playoffs.

Vardaman previously defeated Falkner and Smithville, and the Rams cannot fall from the top, even if they lose to Thrasher Friday.

Even if the H.W. Byers Lions lose Friday and Thrasher wins, the Lions cannot miss the playoffs. This is because they defeated Thrasher earlier this year.

Very Little Settled in 1A Region 2

Three of the ten teams in 1A Region 2 know that they will be in the playoffs in just over a week, but only Shaw knows that it will play its first playoff game at home.  Brooks and Durant are promised a playoff game, and St. Joseph (Greenville) and French Camp can both make or miss the playoffs.

Shaw  7-0–Z

Brooks 6-1–X

Durant 5-2–X

St. Joseph (Greenville) 4-3

French Camp 4-3

Drew  2-4–OUT–While it looks like they could sneak in, earlier season losses to both French Camp and St. Joseph disqualifies them.

X–Earned a playoff Birth

Y–Earned a First Round Home Game

Z–Earned the Region Title

The Shaw Hawks are the region champions no matter what transpires Friday night.

The winner of the matchup between the Brooks Tigers and Durant Tigers will be the second seed from the region. Brooks will travel to Durant for that matchup.

If Brooks wins, scoreboard watching will be in order Friday night to see who makes the playoffs and who misses the playoffs.

If Brooks wins and if French Camp and St. Joseph win, Durant, French Camp and St. Joseph would all finish with 4-3 records.  The teams all went 1-1 against each other, and they defeated and lost to the same teams in the region.  Using scoring differentials to break the tie, Durant wins with a +6 to take the three seed, and the French Camp Panthers come in as the fourth seed because they have a net of zero points.  St. Joseph, with a -6 differential, would be eliminated.

If Brooks wins, French Camp wins, and St. Joseph loses, French Camp would be the three seed and Durant the fourth seed because the Panthers won their regular season matchup.

If Brooks wins, St. Joseph wins and French camp loses, Durant would be the three seed and St. Joseph would be the fourth seed because Durant defeated the Fighting Irish earlier this year.

If Durant wins and St. Joesph and French Camp both lose, Duran will be the two seed, Brooks would be the three seed and St. Joseph would be the four seed because St. Joseph defeated French Camp and Drew earlier this year.

1A Region 3 Easy to Figure Out

October 31, 2011 Leave a comment

If you are looking to determine how teams will shake out in the final standings, 1A Region 3 may be the easiest to understand.  The four playoff teams have been decided, and there are two games between what will be the home teams and the road teams.  Easier still, the home teams and the road teams play each other, which will set an very easy order to the standings.

Nanih Waiya  7-0–Y

Noxapater       7-0–Y

West Oktibbeha  5-2—X

Pelahatchie        5-2—X

The Noxapater Tigers travel to face the Warriors of Nanih Waiya.  The winner will take the region crown.  The loser will be the region runner up.  The West Oktibbeha Timberwolves will host the Pelahatchie Chiefs Friday night.  The winner of this contest will be the three seed, and the loser will be the fourth seed in the region.

How will 1A Region 4 finish

October 31, 2011 Leave a comment

1A Region 4 is the largest region in the state, but surprisingly, a great deal of order has settled on the region.  The four playoff teams are known, but their order of finish will be determined Friday night.

Cathedral 7-1–X

Stringer 7-1–Y

Bogue Chitto 6-2–X

Dexter 6-2–X

X–Guaranteed playoff birth

Y–Guaranteed 1st Round Home Game

Z–Clinched Region Title

The Cathedral Green Wave have the most options is clinching the division crown:

1) Defeat the University Christian Flames

2) Loss and Stringer loss

The Cathedral Green Wave clinch a first round home game if they win, or if Dexter loses.

The Stringer Red Devils can claim the region if they win on the road against the Salem Wildcats and Cathedral loses.  The Red Devils can finish no worse than 2nd.

When the Bogue Chitto Bobcats and Dexter Bulldogs square off, the winner is assured of a third place finish.  The Bobcats can finish no higher, but if the Bulldogs win and Cathedral loses, the Bulldogs will finish as the number two team in the region because of their previous victory over Cathedral.  However, if the Bulldogs win, and Cathedral and Stringer both lose, the Bulldogs will be relegated to third place.  This is because in the three team playoff, the squads would all be 1-1 against each other.  The next tiebreaker involves comparing records against teams in order of finish.  The Bulldogs would be eliminated because of their loss to University Christian, a team that Stringer and Cathedral both defeated.  In this scenario, Cathedral would be the region winner because they defeated Stringer in the regular season.

MHSAA 1A/2A/3A Soccer Championships–North/South State

January 31, 2011 Leave a comment

In girls soccer, Our Lady Academy has made a habit of planning a trip to Clinton in early February. The Crescents have played in every title game since 2005.  In order to make a 2011 trip to Clinton, the Crescents will have to pick up a road victory over the St. Andrew’s Lady Saints.  St. Andrew’s advanced to the South State championship by defeating the Resurrection Lady Eagles Saturday in Pascagoula 1-0.  OLA earned another trip to the South state championship by getting past the Sacred Heart Lady Crusaders 2-0.

The winner of the South State championship will meet either the Lady Flashes of St. Aloysius or the St. Joe’s Lady Bruins.  The Lady Flashes advanced to the North State title game by defeating the South Pontotoc Lady Cougars 1-0 in Vicksburg.  St. Joe’s advanced when they defeated the Blue Wave of the Mississippi School for Math and Science 5-0 in Madison.  The North State title game is currently scheduled for Tuesday in Vicksburg. St. Joe’s defeated St. Aloysius twice this season to claim the Division 4 title over the Lady Flashes. Should the state championship feature St. Joe’s and OLA, it will be the 4th meeting in the state championship between the two teams in the last seven years.

In boys action, the Sacred Heart Crusaders will host the St. Andrew’s Saints in the South State championship.  St. Andrews qualified for the game by defeating the Resurrection Eagles 2-1 Saturday.  The Crusaders had a difficult path to the South State championship as regulation and extra time was not enough time to determine who would advance from their matchup with the St. Patrick Fighting Irish as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. The Crusaders were able to advance when they won a penalty kick shootout. Sacred Heart played in the title game last year, but lost to Corinth.  St. Andrew’s last played in the title game when the Saints won the title in 2007.

There will not be a repeat of last year’s final as the winner of the South State championship will take on the St. Joe’s Bruins Friday in Clinton. The North State title game between the Bruins and the Corinth Warriors was moved up a day to Monday because of expected weather.  The Bruins picked up the 2-1 win in Corinth.  Corinth advanced to the North State title game by defeating the Forest Bearcats, and St. Joe’s qualified for the game by defeating the MSMS Blue Wave.  St. Joe’s is no stranger to the title game having played in it from 2005-2009.
